.hack//Roots is an anime television series produced by Bee Train and directed by Koichi Mashimo. The series is based on the wildly popular .hack franchise and serves as a prequel to the .hack//G.U. video game series. The story follows Haseo, a newbie to the MMORPG "The World R:2," an online game set in a high tech future, who sets out to find a Player-Killer Killer (PKK) known as Tri-Edge, as the latter sent his friend Shino into a coma. Along the way, Haseo meets and befriends several other players, including the Guild Master of the Twilight Brigade, Ovan. The show is set in a fictional future and depicts the life of online gamers in "The World R:2." As they play the game, they become friends, rivals, and sometimes even enemies, but they all share a love for the game and a desire to unravel the mysteries and secrets within it.
The animation, produced by Bee Train Studios, is outstanding, using unique styles and designs to create a world that feels both futuristic and immersive. The series features a cast of talented voice actors, including Takahiro Sakurai as Haseo, Hiroki Touchi as Ovan, Nazuka Kaori as Atoli, Okiayu Ryoutarou as Sakaki, Megumi Toyoguchi as Tabby, Takumi Yamazaki as Yata, Kenta Miyake as Piros, Sanae Kobayashi as Subaro, and Junpei Takiguchi as Phyllo. The series' soundtrack, composed by Ali Project and created by the same team that made the music for the .hack video games, is both haunting and beautiful.

It also explores the darker side of gaming, such as in-game death and the consequences of logging out.
