Ep 1. Gye Baek 1

She becomes Gye Baek’s ally and instrumental in his fight against Silla. Gye Baek also learns of a potential rebellion within Silla from a fellow prisoner.

As the episode progresses, Gye Baek trains rigorously for the upcoming battle. He also develops a bond with Hwa-ryeo, who shares her knowledge of the Silla army and their tactics with him. Once the month is up, Gye Baek faces Silla’s top warrior in a battle that is intense and grueling. The two warriors are evenly matched, but Gye Baek ultimately emerges as the winner.

Gye Baek’s win is not met with excitement, however. Instead, it alarms the Silla king, who sees Gye Baek as a threat to his kingdom. He orders for Gye Baek to be sent to a prison camp where he will be forced to work for the rest of his life. Hwa-ryeo also faces a grim fate as she is sent to a separate prison camp.

The episode ends on a somber note as Gye Baek reflects on his current situation. Despite being victorious in battle, he is now a prisoner who has lost his freedom and his chance at a happy life. The episode sets the tone for the rest of the series, which is likely to focus on Gye Baek’s journey towards reclaiming his freedom and his place in society.
