Marshal Matt Dillon and the residents of Dodge City are faced with a new threat in the form of a mysterious wolf that has been attacking livestock on the outskirts of town. In Gunsmoke season 9 episode 16, titled "Prairie Wolfer," Matt sets out with his trusted deputies Festus and Newly to track down the wolf and put an end to its killing spree.
As the hunt gets underway, tensions in Dodge City begin to run high. Some of the townspeople, particular those who have suffered losses of livestock, are eager to see the wolf taken down by any means necessary. But others, including Matt, are more cautious, recognizing the danger of confronting a fierce predator that is unfamiliar with human beings.
Complicating matters further is the arrival of a group of professional wolf hunters, led by the rough and intimidating Jack Sinclair. Sinclair is convinced that he can track down and kill the wolf quickly, using any means necessary. But Matt is wary of Sinclair and his crew, suspecting that they may be more interested in selling wolf pelts than in protecting the people of Dodge City.
As the hunt for the wolf continues, tensions come to a head between Matt and Sinclair. The two men clash over the best way to catch the wolf, and Sinclair's rough tactics begin to put innocent lives in danger. Meanwhile, Festus and Newly struggle to maintain order in Dodge City as tempers flare among the restless population.
Ultimately, Matt and his team must find a way to stop the wolf before it claims any more lives. But as they close in on their quarry, they begin to realize that there may be more to this situation than meets the eye. Amid the chaos of the hunt, long-buried secrets and bitter rivalries come to light, threatening to tear apart the fabric of Dodge City itself.
