Marshal Matt Dillon and Miss Kitty leave Dodge City to deliver a prisoner named Johnny Cross to a federal penitentiary in Leavenworth. As they traverse the prairie, they encounter a young woman named Rena who is searching for her husband, a buffalo hunter, who has gone missing. She joins their party and they continue on their journey together.
While crossing a river, Matt realizes that they have entered Indian territory and he cautions Rena to be careful. They soon come across a stagecoach that has been attacked and robbed by a group of Indians. The passengers, including a woman named Martha, are unhurt but have lost all of their belongings including their horses.
Matt and his companions offer to escort the stagecoach to the nearest town, Indian Ford. Upon reaching the town, they discover that it is in a state of chaos – the local Indian tribe has been robbed of their stores of food and supplies by group of white men. The town is on the brink of a war with the Indians and Matt must navigate the complicated situation to prevent violence from breaking out.
Matt meets with the Indian chief, Two Bears, and offers to help him recover the stolen goods. The chief agrees but insists that Matt journey with him to meet with the group that took the supplies. Meanwhile, Rena's husband, who had been hiding out in Indian Ford, shows up looking for her. He is a violent man with a grudge against Matt and makes no secret of his disdain for the Marshal.
Matt and Two Bears reach a tense standoff with the group that stole the supplies. Matt convinces the leader of the group, a man named Lyon, to return the goods and leave the Indians alone. As they make their departure, Rena's husband shows up and starts shooting at Matt. The Marshal shoots back and Rena's husband is killed.
The town returns to a state of peace and Matt prepares to leave Indian Ford. Rena decides to stay behind with the man who has been caring for her since her husband's disappearance. Matt and Miss Kitty resume their journey to Leavenworth.
Along the way, Matt reflects on the events in Indian Ford and the complicated relationship between whites and Indians. He ponders the possibility of a future where the two groups can coexist peacefully but remains realistic about the challenges ahead. Together with his companions, he continues his journey, always ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
