The sheriff of a nearby town telegraphs Matt that escaped robbers may be on their way to Dodge. Soon after, Hutch Dawkins sets off firecrackers near the Long Branch, and in the confusion that follows, someone shots and seriously injures Chester. Matt first believes it was the robbers, but later doubts that theory.
