Matt Dillon is the sheriff of Dodge City, Kansas in the late 1800s. In Gunsmoke season 3 episode 11, titled "Fingered," Matt becomes involved in a complicated case of mistaken identity.
The episode opens with Matt escorting a prisoner named Jack into town. Jack was accused of robbing a stagecoach, and the evidence against him seems pretty solid. However, as they ride through town, Jack notices a man named Ned who he claims is the real robber. Matt investigates further and discovers that there is indeed a witness who saw Ned with the stolen money.
Matt tracks down Ned, but the situation becomes complicated when Ned's wife shows up. She insists that her husband is innocent, and that the witness must have mistaken him for someone else. Matt is torn between his duty to uphold the law and his obligation to ensure justice is served.
Things become even more complicated when the witness is found murdered, and all evidence points to Ned as the killer. Matt has to navigate a web of lies and conflicting information to find the truth and bring the real killer to justice.
Meanwhile, Miss Kitty, the owner of the Long Branch Saloon, is dealing with her own troubles. She is being pressured by the town's wealthy businessmen to sell her property, and is fighting to keep her business and her autonomy intact.
As the episode unfolds, Matt's investigation and Miss Kitty's struggles intersect in surprising ways. "Fingered" is a tense, well-crafted episode that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats until the final revelations.
