Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge is a 1987 American made-for-television western film directed by Vincent McEveety and starring James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon, Milburn Stone as Doc Adams, and Amanda Blake as Kitty Russell. The film is based on the popular TV western series, Gunsmoke, which aired on CBS from 1955 to 1975, and is set in the town of Dodge City, Kansas, in the 1880s.
The story picks up 20 years after the series finale, when Matt Dillon returns to Dodge City to find that the town has changed. There are new people, new buildings, and new problems that require his attention. Dillon quickly realizes that he has to reassert his authority as the town's lawman, and he sets out to do so with the help of his old friends, Doc Adams and Kitty Russell.
Along the way, Dillon meets a new cast of characters, including Burt Reynolds as the gunslinger named Quint, who becomes his new deputy. Dennis Weaver reprises his role as Chester Goode in a small cameo, while Sue Randall appears as the new owner of the Long Branch Saloon, and Ken Curtis as Gunnar, an old enemy of Matt Dillon.
As Dillon tries to restore order to Dodge City, he confronts a group of corrupt businessmen who are trying to take control of the town's resources. He also tangles with a band of outlaws led by a ruthless gang leader named Usher, played by Glenn Strange.
The film is a testament to the enduring popularity of Gunsmoke and its beloved characters. James Arness gives a solid performance as Marshal Matt Dillon, playing the role with the same commanding presence and moral authority as he did on the original series. Milburn Stone is warm and avuncular as Doc Adams, while Amanda Blake is as alluring and sassy as ever as Kitty Russell.
Burt Reynolds also shines as Quint, bringing a roguish charm and plenty of swagger to the role of Dillon's new deputy. Sue Randall and Ken Curtis are both excellent in their supporting roles, adding depth and complexity to the film's ensemble cast.
Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge is a entertaining and satisfying tribute to one of television's most iconic western shows. Fans of the original series will love the way the film captures the spirit of the show and gives us a chance to revisit some of our favorite characters. And for those who are new to Gunsmoke, the film provides a great introduction to the world of Dodge City and the men and women who made it into an American icon.
