Gunparade March is a science-fiction, romance, and action anime television series from Japan. The series, produced by the media company Sunrise, consists of 12 episodes, and aired from February 6 to April 23, 2003. The show is set in an alternate reality where the Earth has been invaded by aliens called the Genju. After years of conflict, humanity has developed humanoid weapons known as Humanoid Walking Tanks (HWTs) to fight against the Genju. The story focuses on the lives of the 5121st Platoon, a group of HWT pilots stationed in Tokyo.
The main protagonist of the show is Atsushi Hayami, a cadet of the National Defense Academy who is assigned to the 5121st Platoon after graduating. Atsushi is a skilled HWT pilot, but he is also socially awkward and struggles to connect with others. As he joins the 5121st Platoon and grows closer to his fellow pilots, he faces both the hardships of war and the complexities of love.
The other members of the 5121st Platoon include Mai Shibamura, a self-assured HWT pilot who is the most skilled member of the team, and her twin sister Midori, who is a mechanic and works with HWT maintenance. There's also Takumi Kisaragi, a tough and serious HWT pilot who has a crush on Mai, and Kumiko Komori, a kind and caring HWT pilot who is always willing to lend a hand. Last but not least, there's the team captain, Yoko Machi, who commands the 5121st Platoon with compassion and skill.
As the 5121st Platoon fights the Genju and protects Tokyo, they also navigate their own relationships and personal struggles. Atsushi develops feelings for Mai, but he has to compete with Takumi for her attention. Midori struggles to come to terms with her own feelings for Atsushi, while Kumiko tries to deal with the loss of her previous platoon.
The show balances the action and romance elements well, with dynamic and engaging HWT battles that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The romance between Atsushi and Mai is also sweet and heartfelt, adding emotional depth to the show.
The animation quality of Gunparade March is top-notch for its time, with slick and detailed character designs and fluid action scenes. The soundtrack, composed by Kenji Kawai, is also impressive and adds to the show's overall atmosphere.
While Gunparade March may not be as well-known as other sci-fi anime series, it stands out for its unique blend of action and romance. The show manages to create a compelling setting with interesting characters that keep viewers invested in their story. If you're a fan of mecha anime or enjoy a good romance story with a sci-fi twist, you won't want to miss Gunparade March.
