In the world of the show Gungrave, death is not always the end. The story centers around two characters, Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowell, who are members of a powerful criminal organization known as Millenion. The two become close friends and work their way up the ranks, but their ambition and loyalty to one another eventually leads them down a dark path.

The series is divided into two parts, with the first half focusing on the rise of Brandon and Harry in Millenion. The second half takes place years later, with Brandon being resurrected as a powerful undead creature known as a Gungrave. He has no memory of his past life, but is driven by a need for revenge against those who wronged him.

The show features a large cast of characters, each with their own unique abilities and personalities. Michael McConnohie voices the lead character, Brandon Heat/Gungrave, with Beau Billingslea as his best friend Harry MacDowell. Kirk Thornton provides the voice for Bunji Kugashira, an enforcer for Millenion who has a deep respect for Brandon. Kari Wahlgren voices Maria Asagi, Mika's mother and the love interest of both Brandon and Harry.

Other notable voice actors in the series include Tomokazu Seki as Lee, Kikuko Inoue as Sherry Walken, and Iemasa Kayumi as Bear Walken. Lex Lang plays Blood War, one of the main antagonists of the series, with Takehito Koyasu as Grave, the original name of Brandon's undead form.

Doug Stone voices Jester, a mysterious figure who seems to have a connection to Brandon's past. Chafurin plays Balladbird Lee, a singer who performs music that sometimes predicts the future. Jamieson Price plays Bob Poundmax, an enforcer for Millenion with a love for big guns.
