As a member of the Portland Police Department's Homicide Division, Det. Nick Burkhardt has seen his share of gruesome crime scenes. But nothing prepared him for the strange and supernatural creatures that inhabit his city. In Grimm season 2 episode 17, "One Angry Fuchsbau," Nick and his fellow Grimm, Monroe, come face to face with a particularly dangerous member of the Wesen community.
The episode opens with a young woman named Danielle Turner driving home from a night out with her friends. She's chatting on the phone with her boyfriend, when suddenly she's attacked by a mysterious creature. We don't see the creature much, but we can tell from Danielle's screams that it's something truly terrifying.
Cut to the next morning, and Det. Burkhardt is on the scene of the crime. He and his partner, Hank, are perplexed by the evidence they find. It appears as though the victim was attacked by an animal, but the wounds are too precise and organized to be the result of a random encounter. Nick, who is also a Grimm (a kind of supernatural creature hunter), suspects that they may be dealing with a Wesen (the term used in the show to describe these creatures).
Nick and Monroe (a Wesen himself, and Nick's closest ally) begin digging into the case and quickly realize that they're dealing with a Fuchsbau, a Wesen that can transform into a fox-like creature. The Fuchsbau, named Leonard, is a member of Danielle's sorority, and it quickly becomes clear that he was jealous of her relationship with her boyfriend and attacked her in a fit of rage.
Things get complicated when Leonard is arrested and put on trial. His lawyer, a fellow Wesen, argues that Leonard was acting in self-defense and that the humans (Nick, Hank, and the rest of the police force) are unfairly targeting him because of his heritage. The trial becomes a commentary on race relations, with the Wesen community feeling increasingly oppressed and marginalized by the human community.
As the trial unfolds, we see the various characters reacting in different ways. Nick is torn between his duty as a police officer and his loyalty to Monroe and the Wesen community. Monroe is increasingly frustrated with the way that his people are being treated and the way that Leonard's case is being handled. And Hank, who is unaware of the supernatural element of the case, is simply trying to do his job and bring a murderer to justice.
The tension builds as the trial continues, and eventually, everything comes to a head in a dramatic courtroom showdown. Without giving too much away, let's just say that the end result is surprising and sets the stage for future episodes.
Overall, Grimm season 2 episode 17 is a tense, thought-provoking episode that explores themes of discrimination, prejudice, and racial tension in a unique and unexpected way. The Fuchsbau is a fascinating and terrifying creature, and his trial raises important questions about the relationship between the human and Wesen communities. Whether you're a fan of the show or just looking for a good episode to watch, "One Angry Fuchsbau" is definitely worth checking out.
