Love, Loss, and Legacy is the fifth episode of season eight of Grey's Anatomy. In this episode, the doctors of Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital are each dealing with their own personal and professional challenges.
Meredith and Derek are struggling with the aftermath of losing their baby. While Meredith tries to find solace in work, Derek spirals into a depression and starts to distance himself from her. Meanwhile, Cristina is forced to confront her own feelings about motherhood when she treats a pregnant patient with a rare heart condition.
Elsewhere in the hospital, Lexie is struggling to cope with the fact that her relationship with Mark has ended. She tries to distract herself by focusing on her work, but her emotions get the best of her when she is assigned to care for a young patient with a spinal cord injury.
In addition to the personal challenges faced by the characters, the doctors at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital are also dealing with a high-pressure situation when a group of firefighters are brought in with severe burns. The team has to work quickly and efficiently to save their lives, all while dealing with the emotional toll of the situation.
