In Grey's Anatomy season 2 episode 22, titled "The Name of the Game," tensions run high as the doctors at Seattle Grace Hospital compete for a prestigious grant. The episode opens with a voiceover by Meredith Grey reflecting on the pressure of being a doctor and the constant drive to be the best.
As the grant competition heats up, the doctors are pitted against each other in teams. Meredith is paired with her on-again-off-again love interest, Derek Shepherd, as they work on a proposal for pancreatic cancer research. However, their personal issues continue to get in the way and they struggle to work together. Meanwhile, Cristina Yang and Burke are paired up and struggle to communicate effectively.
The pressure of the competition takes a toll on all the doctors and their personal lives. Addison Montgomery, Derek's estranged wife, arrives at the hospital and causes tension between him and Meredith. Meanwhile, Alex Karev is dealing with a drug-addicted patient and struggling to stay focused.
Despite the personal drama, the doctors continue to work on their grant proposals. As the deadline approaches, tensions reach a breaking point and several doctors make drastic decisions in order to win. Ultimately, the winning proposal is announced, but the victory comes at a cost for some of the doctors.
As the episode comes to a close, Meredith reflects once again on the pressure of being a doctor and the constant need to prove oneself. "The Name of the Game" highlights the competitive nature of medicine and the toll it takes on those who practice it.
