In the season 17 premiere of Grey's Anatomy, titled "All Tomorrow's Parties," the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital grapple with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on their personal and professional lives. The episode also explores the aftermath of the season 16 finale, in which multiple members of the staff were fired or resigned.
As the hospital continues to treat COVID-19 patients, the doctors face challenges such as shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) and difficult ethical decisions about who to prioritize for treatment. Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo) is shown in quarantine at home, having contracted the virus herself, while her colleagues try to keep the hospital running smoothly without her.
Meanwhile, tensions run high as the staff members adjust to recent changes. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) is struggling with his new role as a patient instead of a doctor, while Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) are dealing with the fallout from their romantic entanglement. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) is adjusting to life as a new mother, while also trying to keep a secret from her colleagues.
Against this backdrop, the episode introduces a new character, a former surgeon named Cormac Hayes (Richard Flood). Hayes is brought in to fill the gap left by some of the season 16 departures, and he quickly makes an impression on the other doctors with his blunt, no-nonsense approach.
As the title suggests, "All Tomorrow's Parties" also features several plotlines revolving around celebrations and milestones. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) is preparing to host a virtual baby shower for Amelia, while Jo Karev (Camilla Luddington) is planning a surprise celebration for her boyfriend, Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams). Meanwhile, Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen) considers throwing a fundraising gala to help support the hospital during the pandemic.
As always, the episode is filled with the personal and professional dramas that fans of Grey's Anatomy have come to expect. There are moments of heartbreak, humor, and triumph, as the doctors continue to navigate their complex lives both inside and outside of the hospital walls.
