Ep 4. No Man's Land

As a voiceover by Meredith Grey introduces the episode, we see her and Derek Shepherd getting dressed after spending the night together. Derek wants to have breakfast together, but Meredith has to work.

Back at Seattle Grace Hospital, the interns are fighting over a chart when Izzie Stevens notices that the patient’s symptoms match a rare and dangerous disease called Burkitt lymphoma. The other interns – George O’Malley, Cristina Yang, and Alex Karev – mock her, but when they investigate further, they find that Izzie is right. The patient’s condition quickly deteriorates, and Izzie performs a procedure to save her life.

Meanwhile, Chief Webber is concerned about the hospital’s financial performance and puts pressure on Dr. Burke to work on increasing revenues. This leads Burke to force Cristina to ask a rich patient for a donation, which she does with her characteristic efficiency and tactlessness.

Elsewhere, Meredith is assigned to work with the hospital’s plastic surgeon, Dr. Mark Sloan, who immediately starts flirting with her. She rebuffs him and tries to focus on the case at hand – a young woman who was attacked by a dog and needs extensive facial reconstruction. As Meredith works to keep her cool in the face of Sloan’s advances, she worries that her own relationships with men might be doomed to fail.

The episode’s title, “No Man’s Land,” refers to the moment when multiple patients arrive at the hospital at once and the doctors are overwhelmed. It’s a metaphor for the chaotic nature of their work and the constant sense that they are fighting an unwinnable battle.
