Hal Jordan and Kilowog are assigned to train a new recruit, Razer in the latest episode of Green Lantern: The Animated Series season 1 episode 13 titled "The New Guy". However, the trouble starts when the new guy is not so eager to learn and has his own motives.
Razer comes with a troubled past and carries the weight of his journey on his shoulders. He is bitter, reserved and not interested in being a team player. Kilowog tries his best to connect with him, but Razer pushes him away. On the other hand, Hal is determined to make his training work, even though he has his doubts about Razer. Hal sees a spark in Razer, a desire to be more than what he is, but he is unable to make him see it as well.
As the three embark on a mission to destroy the makeshift factory of the Red Lanterns, a group of individuals who are notorious for their rage, one can sense the tension between Razer and the rest of the team. The mission takes a turn for the worse when Razer makes a grave mistake that puts all of their lives in danger. The team is unaware of what Razer is capable of, and his misstep adds to their trust issues with him. The mission, however, ends on a successful note and they return to Guardians of Oa.
While the new guy was initially seen as a burden by Kilowog and Hal, they are sympathetic once they begin to understand his past. They learn that Razer used to be a Red Lantern himself. The Red Lanterns are known for their extreme aggression and ability to emit red energy due to their rage. The guardians were skeptical about bringing on someone with such a violent past into their ranks. Still, Hal and Kilowog give him another chance and promote him to a Green lantern.
As Razer continues his training, a stronger bond begins to form between the team members, and they start to see Razer's potential. From being a reluctant student, Razer starts to take an interest in training and begins to let down his guard. However, getting Razer to trust them completely is not an easy task. With his battle with the Red Lanterns in his past, he is used to being on his own.
"The New Guy" is an essential episode for the character development of Razer. It provides an insight into his background, his motivations, and what drives him as a character. The audience gets to see how he opens up with his team members and how they integrate him into their ranks. It also shows the audience how Hal and Kilowog are not simply mentor figures; Instead, they offer the team a sense of family and companionship that Razer didn't know he needed.
In conclusion, "The New Guy" is an emotional and engaging episode that focuses on Razer's storyline. It provides the audience with a better understanding of who Razer is as a character, his journey so far, and his potential as a Green Lantern.
