Oliver and Lisa have just returned from a trip to Hawaii, but Oliver is still upset that he missed a big business deal while they were gone. Lisa tries to cheer him up by planning a luau to welcome them home. Meanwhile, the Douglases' neighbors, the Ziffels, are also planning a luau of their own, and both families are competing to see who can throw the better party.
As the day of the luau approaches, Oliver becomes increasingly agitated, convinced that he will not be able to seal the deal with his business associate. Lisa tries to calm him down by reminding him that the luau will be a success regardless of the deal, but he refuses to be comforted.
On the day of the luau, tensions are high as both families prepare for their respective parties. The Douglases go all out, with Lisa decorating the house and even donning a hula skirt and lei. Meanwhile, the Ziffels keep things simple, renting a pig for a traditional Kalua roast.
As the guests arrive, it becomes clear that the Ziffels' luau is more popular, and most of the guests end up there instead of at the Douglases'. Oliver is humiliated, convinced that his business associate will never take him seriously if he can't even throw a decent party.
But just as things seem to be at their lowest, the Douglases receive a surprise visit from an unexpected guest, someone who could mean the difference between sealing the deal and losing the business forever.
In the end, both families come together to celebrate, putting aside their differences and enjoying the festivities. The luau may not have turned out exactly as planned, but it was a success in its own way, with everyone leaving with full stomachs and happy hearts.
