Oliver Douglas, a successful lawyer from New York City, and his wife Lisa have decided to leave the fast-paced city life and move to rural Hooterville. They purchased a rundown farm, and have been getting to know the quirky townspeople ever since.
In season 3, episode 24 "Our Son, the Barber," Oliver and Lisa's son, George, comes to visit them on the farm. However, things take an unexpected turn when George decides that he wants to drop out of college and become a barber.
Oliver and Lisa are shocked by George's sudden career change, and they both try to convince him to stick with college. However, George is determined to become a barber and makes a deal with a local barber to apprentice under him.
Meanwhile, the townspeople of Hooterville are excited about a new barber in town and begin to flock to George's makeshift barbershop in the Douglas' barn. Despite their reservations about George's career choice, Oliver and Lisa cannot deny the joy that their son's new business brings to the community.
As George continues to work as a barber, he begins to gain confidence in his abilities and starts to think about opening his own barber shop. However, when he approaches Oliver and Lisa for a loan to start his business, they refuse, believing that George still needs to finish college.
George becomes frustrated with his parents and decides to leave the farm to pursue his barbering career elsewhere. Oliver and Lisa are left to ponder whether they made the right decision in pushing George towards college instead of supporting his chosen career path.
In the end, George returns to the farm, having learned that success is not measured by a college degree or a traditional career path. Oliver and Lisa come to accept their son's decision to become a barber and offer to help him start his own business.
