Oliver Wendell Douglas, played by Eddie Albert, has faced a lot of problems ever since he moved from New York City to Hooterville with his wife Lisa, played by Eva Gabor. He's had to adjust to the rural lifestyle and learn how to farm, deal with the quirky townsfolk, and navigate the politics of the Hooterville community. In season 3 episode 17 of Green Acres, titled "Not Guilty," Oliver finds himself in a sticky situation when he's accused of stealing from the Hooterville bank.
The episode opens with Oliver walking out of the bank with a bag of money, only to be stopped by a police officer who accuses him of stealing. Oliver is stunned and insists that he has done no such thing, but he is arrested and taken to trial. Lisa is worried and upset, but Oliver remains confident that he will be able to prove his innocence. He hires a local lawyer, who warns him that the trial won't be easy, but Oliver is determined to clear his name.
As the trial begins, Oliver is put on the stand and questioned about his actions that day. He gives a detailed account of how he had gone to the bank to withdraw some money and was given the bag by the teller who made a mistake. He had no idea what was in the bag until he was stopped by the police officer. However, the prosecution argues that Oliver must have known he was taking money that wasn't his and is guilty of theft.
In an effort to prove his innocence, Oliver decides to investigate the bank himself. He and Lisa visit the bank after hours and begin examining the paperwork and records. They soon discover that the bank has made a mistake and that Oliver was given the wrong bag of money by the teller. The bag he was meant to receive was actually meant for a different account holder. Armed with this information, Oliver hopes to clear his name in court the next day.
The trial continues, and Oliver presents his evidence to the court. The prosecution tries to argue that the mistake was Oliver's fault and that he should have realized something was wrong sooner, but Oliver remains determined to prove his innocence. Finally, the judge delivers his verdict and announces that Oliver is not guilty of theft. Oliver and Lisa are overjoyed, and the Hooterville community celebrates their victory with them.
