Ep 12. Jealousy, English Style

Oliver and Lisa Douglas spend a lot of time together, and while they're happy, seasoned viewers know that jealousies are afoot in Hooterville. In "Jealousy, English Style," the 12th episode of Green Acres' third season, those emotions come bubbling to the surface.

Lisa's ex-boyfriend Nigel (Simon Scott), an English hotel magnate, shows up in Hooterville with his beautiful new girlfriend. And while Lisa insists she's over him, Oliver starts to feel a bit threatened by the suave businessman and his luxurious lifestyle.

To make things worse, he's also up against the Hooterville Trolley Company, which threatens to put him out of business. On top of that, the town council is beginning construction on a new hotel, which will likely run him and his small farm out of town.

As Oliver feels more and more isolated, he begins to worry that Lisa is going to leave him for Nigel, so he sets out to become just like him. But as he dons a fancy suit, starts smoking cigars, and tries to fit in with Nigel's friends, he realizes that he's not really cut out for that lifestyle.

Meanwhile, Lisa starts to see Nigel for who he really is: a vain, self-centered man who only cares about himself and his success. She realizes that the former flame she once loved is still just a small-town girl at heart, happy on the farm with Oliver and their friends.

As the tension between Nigel and Oliver comes to a head, Lisa has to choose between the simple life with her husband or the glamorous world her ex-boyfriend can offer her. In the end, however, it's Oliver's unpretentiousness and good heart that win out, and Lisa reaffirms her love for him.

"Jealousy, English Style" isn't just a fun little episode about rural angst, however. It also touches on themes of conformity and what it means to be happy, as Oliver comes to realize that he's not comfortable pretending to be someone he's not, and that ultimately, he's at his best when he's true to himself.

Overall, the episode is a reminder of why Green Acres is such a beloved show, as the whimsical world of Hooterville is inhabited by a cast of characters that are both eccentric and relatable.
