Oliver Wendell Douglas, an attorney from New York City, and his wife Lisa have left the big city to live a simpler life in the countryside. In the village of Hooterville, they have purchased a farm with a ramshackle farmhouse. Despite his lack of experience, Oliver is determined to make the farm profitable and self-sustaining. In the fifth episode of Green Acres, titled "My Husband, the Rooster Renter," Oliver's plans take an unexpected turn when he tries to rent out their rooster to a neighboring farmer.
As the episode begins, Lisa discovers that their rooster is causing too much noise and chaos around the farm. Oliver comes up with a solution to this problem – he decides to rent out the rooster to Mr. Haney, a shifty local salesman and "jack-of-all-trades." Haney agrees to the deal, and soon the rooster is crowing from a different coop.
However, Oliver soon realizes that he has made a mistake. The rooster, it turns out, is an essential part of the farm – he helps to fertilize the soil and keep pests away. Without him, the farm's productivity suffers. Oliver decides to renege on the rooster rental agreement, but Haney refuses to take the bird back. Instead, he offers to sell Oliver a machine that can imitate the rooster's crow.
Meanwhile, Lisa has her hands full dealing with the farm's other animals – including a pig that needs a haircut and a cow that is unhappy with her living conditions. She enlists the help of Arnold Ziffel, the pig with whom she has a special bond.
As the episode proceeds, Oliver tries to find a way to get the rooster back without losing face with Haney. He consults with Fred and Doris Ziffel, his neighbors and fellow farmers. They advise him to "out-Haney" Haney – in other words, to trick him by using his own tactics. Oliver decides to offer Haney a fake rooster that he has made himself out of an old shoe, a pair of socks, and some straw. The plan seems to work at first, but then Haney catches on and confronts Oliver, demanding his money back.
In the end, Oliver decides to face Haney head-on and tell him the truth. Haney, impressed by Oliver's honesty and tenacity, returns the rooster without any further fuss. The Douglas farm is restored to its former glory, and Lisa is able to give Arnold the pig a proper haircut.
Overall, "My Husband, the Rooster Renter" is a charming and lighthearted episode of Green Acres that showcases the show's clever writing and quirky characters. Fans of classic sitcoms and rural comedies will enjoy watching Oliver and Lisa navigate the challenges of farm life – and dealing with the occasional unscrupulous salesman.
