Oliver Wendell Douglas (portrayed by Eddie Albert) is a New York City lawyer who decides to leave the hustle and bustle of big city life in order to become a farmer. He purchases a farm in Hooterville, a small rural community in the state of Illinois, with his wife Lisa (portrayed by Eva Gabor). Throughout the series, the couple comes across a myriad of quirky characters and hilarious situations as they adapt to life in the countryside.
In Green Acres season 1 episode 27, titled "Never Look a Gift Tractor in the Mouth," Oliver and Lisa receive an unexpected gift from Mr. Haney (portrayed by Pat Buttram), a salesman who is notorious for swindling the citizens of Hooterville. The gift is a brand new tractor, and despite their suspicions, Oliver and Lisa are overjoyed at the prospect of owning such a valuable piece of machinery.
However, their excitement quickly turns to frustration when they discover that the tractor is defective and won't start. To make matters worse, Mr. Haney insists that he is not responsible for the malfunction, and Oliver and Lisa are left wondering how they will ever get their farm work done without a functioning tractor.
The couple decides to take matters into their own hands and attempt to repair the tractor themselves. They enlist the help of Eb (portrayed by Tom Lester), their dim-witted farmhand, who has a passion for tinkering with machinery. However, their attempts at fixing the tractor only make things worse and they end up causing more damage than good.
In an effort to salvage the situation, Oliver and Lisa turn to Hank Kimball (portrayed by Alvy Moore), the county agricultural agent, for advice. However, Hank is as clueless as they are and his attempts to fix the tractor only make the situation even more comical.
As the episode progresses, Oliver and Lisa become increasingly desperate to get the tractor up and running. They begin to question whether they should have ever accepted the gift from Mr. Haney in the first place, and wonder if they should have trusted their instincts when they suspected that something was too good to be true.
Overall, "Never Look a Gift Tractor in the Mouth" is a hilarious episode that showcases the comedic genius of the show's cast. It touches on themes of trust, perseverance, and the challenges of adapting to a new way of life, all while keeping audiences entertained with its lighthearted humor and quirky characters.
