Oliver finds himself in quite a predicament when Haney performs a bit of trickery and gets him elected as Hooterville's deputy. He soon realizes the job is not as easy as he thought it would be. With no experience in law enforcement, he tries his best to keep the peace but only ends up making things worse.
Arnold, the county pig, goes missing and Oliver takes it upon himself to investigate. He enlists the help of Eb to visit all the farms in Hooterville to find the missing pig. Meanwhile, Lisa is worried about Oliver and keeps warning him to be careful as she believes he is in over his head.
Oliver's inexperience becomes more apparent when he tries to round up a group of kids who are playing hooky from school. He manages to catch them but instead of taking them to the schoolhouse, he thinks it would be more effective to give them a stern talking to. The kids do not take him seriously and end up running off, leaving him embarrassed.
Things take a turn for the worse when Mr. Haney is robbed at gunpoint at his store. Oliver decides to take matters into his own hands and sets up a stakeout with the help of Eb. However, the stakeout goes horribly wrong when they mistake a scarecrow for the robber and end up getting into a scuffle with the town drunk.
Meanwhile, Lisa decides to take charge and tries to solve the mystery of Arnold's disappearance on her own. She takes matters into her own hands and goes door-to-door, questioning residents and taking notes. Her investigation leads her to discover that Arnold has been playing poker with the other animals and was being held hostage by a group of cows who were trying to win back their milk money.
In the end, Oliver decides to resign from his position as deputy and appoints Haney as his replacement. Lisa returns Arnold to his rightful owner and Hooterville returns to its normal chaotic state.
Overall, "The Deputy" is a hilarious episode that showcases the comedic talents of the Green Acres cast. Oliver's inexperience and bumbling attempts at law enforcement are entertaining to watch, while Lisa's no-nonsense attitude and detective work provide a refreshing contrast to his antics. The episode's subplot involving Arnold and the cows adds a quirky twist to the story and highlights the absurdity of life in Hooterville. All in all, "The Deputy" is a must-see episode for fans of the show and anyone looking for a good laugh.
