Great Canal Journeys is a British television documentary series that follows the journey of Timothy West and Prunella Scales as they travel along canals around the world. In season 4 episode 4, entitled "Bristol and the West Countries," the couple explores the picturesque waterways of the West of England.

Starting their journey in the vibrant city of Bristol, the duo navigates their way through the busy harbor and discovers the city's rich maritime history. They explore the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge, which spans the River Avon, and visit the iconic SS Great Britain, an iron-hulled steamship that was launched in 1843. The couple also learns about the role of the harbor in the Transatlantic slave trade and visits the museum at the Underfall Yard, a working boatyard that dates back to the 19th century.

Moving on to the Kennet and Avon Canal, Timothy and Prunella traverse the picturesque waterway, which connects the Bristol Channel to the River Thames. They visit the town of Bradford on Avon and explore its charming streets lined with historic stone buildings. Along the way, they encounter locks, aqueducts, and tunnels as they make their way towards the Caen Hill Flight, a series of 29 locks that raise the canal 237 feet over a distance of two miles.

Continuing westward, the couple explores the tranquil beauty of the Somerset Levels, a vast wetland area that has been carefully managed for centuries by farmers and engineers. They visit the iconic Glastonbury Tor, a hill that rises above the levels and is shrouded in myth and legend. They also explore the stunning cathedral city of Wells and its magnificent 13th-century cathedral.

The final leg of their journey takes Timothy and Prunella to the picturesque Cotswold Canals, which wind through rolling hills and picturesque villages. They learn about the ongoing restoration work being carried out on these once-abandoned waterways and chat with local volunteers who are working hard to preserve them for future generations to enjoy. They also visit the charming town of Stroud, known for its textiles and vibrant arts scene.

Throughout their journey, Timothy and Prunella interact with local residents and experts who share their knowledge and passion for the waterways of the West of England. Along the way, they encounter wildlife such as swans, herons, and kingfishers, and marvel at the stunning scenery that surrounds them. Ultimately, their journey is a reminder of the enduring beauty and fascination of the canals and waterways that criss-cross the UK and the world.
