In Grantchester season 4, Episode 3, we see the continuation of the lives of the residents of the titular village. James Norton plays the role of Sidney Chambers, the local parish vicar who finds himself constantly drawn into various criminal investigations that require his expertise in human nature and his connections to the community. In this episode, Sidney is faced with a crisis in his own personal life that causes him to question the direction his life is taking.
At the start of the episode, Sidney is dealing with the aftermath of a passionate encounter with his friend and colleague, Leonard (played by Al Weaver). While Leonard seems to be ready to move on from the experience, Sidney is left questioning his own feelings. As he tries to make sense of what has happened, he receives a visit from the reclusive author, P.D. James. She has come to Grantchester seeking inspiration for her latest crime novel, and she is intrigued by Sidney's reputation as a sleuth.
Meanwhile, the local police department is dealing with their own set of problems. When a young woman named Felicity Howard is found dead in a local river, the police are unsure whether they are dealing with a murder or an accident. As they begin to investigate, they discover that Felicity was a member of an exclusive group of young women who were all about to make their debut in society. As they delve deeper, they uncover a web of secrets and lies that threaten to rock the upper echelons of society.
As Sidney becomes involved in the investigation, he starts to question his own motives. Is he really trying to help solve the crime, or is he just looking for a distraction from his own personal issues? His dilemma is further complicated when he discovers that his former flame, Amanda Kendall (played by Morven Christie), is back in town. Amanda is now married and has a child, but she still has feelings for Sidney and wants to reconnect with him.
As the investigation into Felicity's death continues, the police make a breakthrough. They discover that Felicity had been anonymously reporting incidents of sexual assault within her social circle. Could her death be connected to her activism? The investigation takes a dark turn as the team begins to uncover some disturbing truths about the group of young women and the men who have been preying on them.
In the midst of all this, Sidney is struggling with his own feelings. He is torn between his desire to help solve the case and his need to confront his own demons. His conversations with P.D. James are illuminating, as she helps him understand that his work as a vicar is not just about solving crimes, but about helping people find meaning and purpose in their lives.
As the episode draws to a close, the various storylines begin to converge. Sidney confronts Amanda about their past relationship, and they have a heart-to-heart about the choices they have made. The police team finally cracks the case and discovers the identity of Felicity's killer. And Sidney takes some comfort in the knowledge that his work as a vicar has helped bring justice to a troubled community.
