Ep 1. Episode 1

In the first episode of season 4 of Grantchester, we see the return of our beloved main characters, including the crime-solving Vicar, Sidney Chambers (played by James Norton) and his partner in crime, Detective Geordie Keating (played by Robson Green). The episode starts out with a shot of a beautiful countryside estate, where we see a young woman running through the fields, seemingly in a rush. She stops suddenly to retrieve a flower, before continuing on her way, only to be stopped by a man driving a car.

We soon learn that the young woman is none other than Amanda Kendall (played by Morven Christie), Sidney's former flame who left him at the end of season 3 to marry another man. The man in the car is her husband, Guy (played by Tom Brittney), who is a wealthy and successful businessman. Amanda seems distressed and unhappy in her marriage, and she seeks out Sidney's help in solving a mystery that has been plaguing her. A box of seemingly innocuous objects, including a harmonica and a pocket watch, has been left on her doorstep each day for the past week, with no explanation or note. Amanda wants Sidney to help her find out who is leaving these items, and why they are doing so.

Meanwhile, Geordie is dealing with problems of his own, as he confronts the fact that his wife Cathy (played by Kacey Ainsworth) is having an affair. He is devastated and hurt, but he tries to remain strong and keep up appearances for the sake of their children. As always, his work with Sidney provides a welcome distraction from his personal troubles.

As Sidney and Geordie begin to investigate the mysterious box of objects, their search takes them to a nearby army base, where they meet a young soldier named Gary Bell (played by Sam Frenchum). Gary is a gifted musician who is struggling to fit in with his fellow soldiers, and Sidney sees in him a kindred spirit. Along with Gary's friend and fellow soldier, we see how their complex web of secrets and deceptions are entangling the puzzle that Sidney is trying to solve.

As the episode progresses, we see tensions mounting between Guy and Sidney, as both men seem to be vying for Amanda's affections. Sidney is also struggling with his own feelings for Amanda, and we see that he is finding it difficult to keep his emotions in check. Meanwhile, Geordie is slowly coming to terms with the fact that his marriage may be over, and he is left feeling lost and unsure about his future.

Overall, the first episode of Grantchester season 4 is a compelling and engrossing start to what promises to be another intriguing season. The return of our favorite characters provides a sense of comfort and familiarity, while the new additions to the cast bring fresh energy and excitement to the show. We are left with many questions at the end of this episode, but one thing is for sure: we are in for another thrilling ride with Sidney, Geordie, and the rest of the gang.
