In season 10 episode 4 of Grand Designs, we are introduced to a unique and historic project in the town of Stowmarket. The Tudor Guildhall, a Grade II* listed building, is being restored and transformed into a modern family home.
With over 700 years of history, the Tudor Guildhall has seen many changes over the years, including being used as a market hall, a courtroom, a theatre, a library, and even a museum. But in recent years, the building had fallen into disrepair and was in desperate need of restoration.
Owners Jason and Michelle were drawn to the building's history and character and saw an opportunity to turn it into a unique and stunning home for their family. They enlisted the help of architect Mark Nightingale to help them with their ambitious project.
Restoring a building of this age and size presented many challenges, including dealing with the many listed building regulations that needed to be adhered to. But the team was determined to preserve as much of the original building as possible, including the wooden beams and timber frames.
Inside the building, the team had to create a modern layout that would work for a family. This included adding new staircases, installing bathrooms, and creating a large open-plan kitchen and living space.
One of the most striking features of the building is the impressive double-height great hall, which was restored to its former glory. The team worked tirelessly to bring back the original colours and patterns of the room's medieval wall paintings.
Throughout the restoration, the team encountered several surprises, including the discovery of a hidden fireplace and a hidden room, which they decided to keep in their plans for the new home.
The project was not without its setbacks, with the team facing a difficult winter and challenges with the drainage system. But they persevered, and the finished results are truly stunning.
The Tudor Guildhall is now a unique and modern family home, while still maintaining its historical character and charm. Its restoration is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the team involved in the project.
Overall, Grand Designs season 10 episode 4 provides an insight into the challenges and rewards of restoring a historic building and turning it into a family home, while still maintaining its unique character and history.
