Grace Under Funded is the ninth episode of the fifth season of the American television sitcom Grace Under Fire. The sitcom follows the life of Grace Kelly, a divorced mother of three, who lives in a small Missouri town with her children. In this episode, we see Grace struggling to raise money for the school science project, which involves planting a garden.
Grace's son Quentin is excited about the science project and is eager to get started. However, the school budget for the project is very limited, and Grace finds out that it's not nearly enough to be able to get everything they need. Grace is forced to come up with a plan to raise the extra funds herself, or risk her son's disappointment.
Grace first goes to her boss, Jimmy, hoping he will be able to donate to the project. However, Jimmy declines, saying that he needs the money for his business. Grace is disappointed but not discouraged. She decides to try other sources of funding, such as the PTA and local businesses.
Grace's attempts to get funding from the PTA are not successful, as the members are more interested in planning a school fundraiser than donating to the science project. Grace is left to try and raise the funds herself. She turns to the local businesses, but they also prove to be unwilling to help.
Feeling defeated, Grace decides to give up on her efforts to raise the funds. She confides in her friend and co-worker Nadine, who tries to motivate her to keep trying. Nadine reminds Grace that her son is counting on her, and that she can't give up now.
Feeling embarrassed, Grace decides to try one more time. She approaches a wealthy businessman in the area and gives him a passionate plea for funding. The businessman agrees to donate the funds needed, but only on the condition that Grace attends a ball with him as his date.
Uncertain about the proposition, Grace confides in her friends, and they convince her to accept the date and the donation. However, Grace is not particularly interested in attending the ball, and she spends the evening trying to get away from the businessman.
In the end, Grace successfully raises the funds for the science project. Although she has to attend the ball with the businessman, she is excited for her son to be able to participate in the science project and to see his enthusiasm for it.
The episode explores the difficulties of funding for education, and the various ways in which people try to overcome those obstacles. Grace's struggle to raise funds for the science project is relatable, and the episode does a good job of showing the oftentimes frustrating process of trying to get support from those around us.
Overall, Grace Under Funded is a lighthearted, enjoyable episode of the sitcom that highlights the importance of persistence and determination, even in the face of difficult challenges.
