In the fifth season premiere of Gotham, titled "Year Zero," the city is in complete chaos as the story picks up after the events of the season four finale. The bridges to Gotham have been destroyed, leaving the city isolated and under martial law. Jim Gordon, played by Ben McKenzie, is struggling to keep order as the sole law enforcement officer left in the city. Meanwhile, the villains who were once locked away in Arkham Asylum have escaped and are wreaking havoc on the streets, including Penguin, Riddler, and Barbara Kean.
The episode begins with an intense action sequence featuring Gordon and his team trying to stop a train carrying explosives from crashing into the city. The train is being manipulated by one of the escaped inmates, which ultimately leads to Gordon and a few of his officers being taken hostage. As a result, the city erupts in chaos, with looters and criminals taking advantage of the situation.
We then see Penguin, played by Robin Lord Taylor, living in a luxurious penthouse, completely unaffected by the chaos and destruction outside. However, we soon learn that he's not the one calling the shots. In fact, he's simply a pawn in the hands of the true villain of the season, who remains shrouded in mystery.
As Gordon tries to reclaim control of the city and stop the villains from doing any more harm, he starts to realize that his team may not be enough. He decides to team up with the young vigilante, Bruce Wayne, played by David Mazouz, who's been training for months to become the Dark Knight. The two form an unlikely alliance and begin working together to take down the villains who are running rampant throughout the city.
Meanwhile, the Riddler, played by Cory Michael Smith, is having trouble dealing with his split personalities, trying desperately to regain control of his own mind. And Barbara Kean, played by Erin Richards, is building a new gang of criminals to rival the Penguin's, all while trying to maintain her power as one of the top dogs in Gotham's underworld.
The season five premiere of Gotham is action-packed and sets up what promises to be an exciting final season for the series. With the villains more dangerous and unpredictable than ever before and Gordon and Bruce teaming up to stop them, there's no telling what will happen next in this thrilling and dark take on the Batman universe.
