Gary Sparrow finds himself in a bind when he inadvertently gets involved in a robbery scheme while visiting the year 1963 in "Out of Town," the third episode of season 4 of the beloved British sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart.

The episode begins with Gary, played by Nicholas Lyndhurst, excitedly preparing for a trip to the past. Having discovered a time portal in the war-torn streets of London, Gary has been leading a double life, splitting his time between his present-day existence as a 1990s TV repairman and his secret adventures in the 1940s. This time, however, Gary sets his sights on a different time period, transporting himself to 1963.

Eager to embrace the swinging 60s, Gary lands himself in a picturesque coastal town, where he hopes to indulge in the nostalgia of a bygone era. Wrapped in his vintage attire, he immerses himself in the vibrant atmosphere, relishing in the music and fashion that defined the decade. However, it doesn't take long for Gary's idyllic getaway to take an unexpected turn.

As Gary innocently explores the town, he stumbles upon a group of local youth hatching a plan to rob a nearby bank. Accidentally witnessing their secret meeting, Gary becomes an unwitting target of their criminal intentions. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Gary must now find a way to navigate the dangerous waters of this criminal underworld without altering the future or getting caught in the crossfire.

To complicate matters further, Gary soon discovers that one of the young schemers is none other than Reg Deadman, his time-traveling comrade and notorious troublemaker. Reg, played by Victor McGuire, is infamously unreliable and impulsive, making him a wild card in this precarious situation. Gary must decide whether to ally himself with Reg, attempting to steer him away from a life of crime, or stand his ground and risk his own safety.

Throughout the episode, the tension builds as Gary tries to gather information about the robbery plot while staying one step ahead of the young criminals. His natural charm and resourcefulness are put to the test as he delves deeper into the town's seedy underbelly, interacting with an eclectic cast of characters, each with their own motives and secrets.

Amidst the thrilling series of events, the episode does not skimp on the show's signature humor and heartwarming moments. Gary's inherent wit and quick-thinking provide plenty of comedic relief, while his longing for his present-day love interest, Phoebe, played by Elizabeth Carling, adds an emotional layer to the story. Balancing comedy and drama with grace, Goodnight Sweetheart maintains its distinctive tone throughout the episode.

As the climax approaches, Gary faces a race against time to outsmart the young criminals and prevent the robbery from taking place. But will he succeed, or will this excursion to the past leave him stranded in a dangerous predicament? And how will the events of this episode impact Gary's relationship with both his present-day life and his adventures in the 1940s?

"Out of Town" promises to be a thrilling and captivating episode of Goodnight Sweetheart, blending humor, suspense, and time-traveling escapades. With its well-developed characters, clever writing, and fascinating premise, the show continues to captivate audiences, leaving them eagerly anticipating the next installment in Gary Sparrow's extraordinary double life.
