In the season 3 premiere of Good Times, titled "A Real Cool Job", the Evans family is faced with a new challenge as JJ struggles to find a job that he actually enjoys. After working a series of dead-end, unsatisfying jobs, JJ decides to follow in his father's footsteps and become a painter. However, he quickly realizes that his lack of experience and connections in the art world make it difficult to land a job.
Meanwhile, Thelma is excited to start college but is immediately met with a racist professor who is dismissive of her talent and abilities. Despite her initial frustration and disappointment, Thelma decides to stand up to the professor and prove him wrong.
As the family navigates these challenges, they also face financial struggles when Florida's hours at the diner are cut. With rent due and bills piling up, the Evans family must come together and support one another in order to make ends meet.
