Good Omens is an Amazon Prime Video series that premiered in May 2019, based on the beloved novel of the same name by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. The show stars David Tennant as the demon Crowley and Michael Sheen as the angel Aziraphale, both of whom have been residing on Earth for centuries and have grown quite fond of it. The premise of the show revolves around their efforts to prevent the end of the world, which is scheduled to happen in just a few days' time.
The chemistry between Tennant and Sheen is a highlight of the show, with their characters' conflicting personalities and genuine affection for each other providing a lot of the humor and heart. Crowley is a suave, devil-may-care demon who loves cars and rock music, while Aziraphale is a fussy eternally bookish angel who takes great pride in his knowledge of fine wines and cuisine. Watching these two oddball characters navigate their unlikely friendship is a real treat.
The supporting cast of the show is also incredibly talented, with notable performances from actors like Ned Dennehy as the delightfully quirky mad scientist, Jon Hamm as the smarmy yet charismatic archangel Gabriel, and Frances McDormand as the voice of God (yes, really). The show also features appearances from Ariyon Bakare, Daniel Mays, Sian Brooke, Nick Offerman, Nina Sosanya, Anna Maxwell Martin, Adria Arjona, Miranda Richardson, Michael McKean, Jack Whitehall, Mireille Enos, Yusuf Gatewood, and Brian Cox.
In addition to its stellar cast, Good Omens features gorgeous production design and special effects that bring the show's fantastical elements to life. From demon eyes to angelic miracles and everything in between, the show's visual style is both whimsical and immersive.
As for the plot, Good Omens follows Crowley and Aziraphale as they try to prevent the arrival of the Antichrist, who is destined to bring about the apocalypse. Along the way, they encounter a variety of colorful characters, including the aforementioned mad scientist (and his pet cucumber), a witch named Anathema Device (Sian Brooke), and a group of bumbling would-be Satanists led by the hilariously inept Newton Pulsifer (Jack Whitehall).
But while the show is certainly filled with humor and fantastical elements, it also tackles some heavier themes, including the nature of good and evil, the importance of friendship and loyalty, and the idea that the end of the world might not be so cut and dried after all. It's a thoughtful and thought-provoking series that manages to balance humor and heart with genuine stakes and high stakes.
All in all, Good Omens is a delightfully quirky and thoroughly entertaining series that will appeal to fans of fantasy, comedy, and drama alike. Its wit, charm, and heart make it one of the most delightful shows on Amazon Prime Video.
Good Omens is a series that ran for 2 seasons (12 episodes) between May 31, 2019 and on Amazon
