Gomorrah is a critically acclaimed Italian crime drama that follows the inner workings of the Camorra, a powerful criminal organization based in Naples. The show, which began airing in 2014, is based on the book of the same name by Roberto Saviano, who himself went undercover to research and expose the Camorra's activities.
The series has been praised for its grittiness and realism, as well as its exploration of the human side of organized crime. It follows a number of different characters, including members of the criminal organization, their families, and law enforcement officials who are trying to bring them down. Throughout the course of the series, viewers witness the brutal violence and corruption that are a part of daily life for those involved in the Camorra, as well as the devastating effects it has on those around them.
At the center of the show is Ciro Di Marzio, played by Salvatore Esposito. Ciro is a ruthless and ambitious member of the Camorra who is willing to go to any lengths to rise in the organization. He is both feared and admired by those around him, and his cunning moves often leave his enemies scrambling to keep up. Despite his violent nature, however, Ciro is also a deeply human character, driven by both his love for his family and his desire for power and respect.
Another key figure in the show is Gennaro Savastano, played by Marco D'Amore. Gennaro is the heir apparent to the Savastano clan, one of the most powerful families in the Camorra. He is young and hot-headed, often making impulsive decisions that put himself and others in danger. However, he is also deeply loyal to his family, and will do whatever it takes to protect them from their enemies.
Alongside these two central characters are a number of other players in the world of the Camorra. These include Patrizia, a young woman who is forced to work for the organization in order to support her family; Enzo, a member of the Camorra who is struggling to balance his family life with his criminal activities; and Don Pietro Savastano, Gennaro's father and former head of the Savastano clan, who is now in prison but still wields significant influence over the organization.
Throughout the series, viewers are taken on a rollercoaster ride of violence, tragedy, and betrayal. The show does not shy away from depicting the brutal reality of life in the Camorra, and much of the violence is graphic and difficult to watch. However, it is also a deeply compelling drama that is anchored by strong performances from its cast, particularly Salvatore Esposito and Marco D'Amore.
One of the most unique aspects of the show is its use of Naples as a setting. The city, with its crowded streets and crumbling buildings, is depicted as a place where danger lurks around every corner. This sense of place is further enhanced by the show's use of local dialects and slang, which can sometimes be difficult for non-Italian speakers to follow (hence the need for English subtitles).
Overall, Gomorrah is a gripping and intense crime drama that is not for the faint of heart. Its exploration of the inner workings of the Camorra is both fascinating and horrifying, and its characters are complex and deeply human. If you're a fan of gritty crime dramas, this one is definitely worth checking out.
