In Gokusen season 1 episode 3, titled "Kuma's First Experience," the focus is on one of the students in Yankumi's class, Kuma. Kuma is a big, burly guy with a bit of a mean streak, but deep down, he's a kind-hearted person.
The episode begins with Kuma getting into a fight with a group of guys from a rival school. Yankumi breaks up the fight and sends Kuma back to class. Later on, Kuma confesses to Yankumi that he's never been in a real fight before. This surprises Yankumi, given Kuma's intimidating appearance.
Yankumi decides that Kuma needs to experience some real-life situations to toughen him up and make him a better person. She pulls some strings and gets Kuma an internship at a local boxing gym. Kuma is hesitant at first, but he quickly takes to the job and finds that he enjoys boxing.
The gym's owner, Mr. Inuzuka, takes a liking to Kuma and begins to train him. Kuma finds that boxing is a great way to work out his aggression in a controlled environment, and he becomes more confident in himself.
Meanwhile, Yankumi is dealing with some tension between her and the other teachers at the school. They don't approve of her unorthodox teaching methods and think that she's a bad influence on the students. Yankumi knows that she's different from the other teachers, but she is determined to have a positive impact on her students' lives.
As Kuma becomes more involved in the boxing world, he meets a girl named Yuka who is also a boxer. Yuka is tough and fierce, and Kuma is initially intimidated by her. However, they quickly become friends and start to spar together.
One day, Yuka collapses during a match and is taken to the hospital. Kuma is worried about her and rushes to the hospital to see her. He learns that Yuka has a heart condition and can never box again. Kuma is devastated by the news and feels like he's lost a part of himself.
Yankumi sees how upset Kuma is and decides to take him on a trip to cheer him up. They go to a park and have a picnic, and Kuma opens up to Yankumi about his feelings. Yankumi listens to him and offers him some words of encouragement.
In the end, Kuma realizes that even though he's not a boxer, he can still use the skills he's learned to defend himself and protect those he cares about. He returns to school with a newfound confidence and a better understanding of himself.
