  • February 27, 1999

In Godzilla: The Series season 1 episode 14, titled "Monster War (3)", the final battle between Godzilla and the three-headed monster, King Ghidorah, reaches its climax. In the previous episodes, a group of aliens called the Vorians planned to take over the Earth by unleashing a trio of genetically-engineered monsters - King Cobra, Giant Bat, and King Ghidorah. They made a deal with Dr. Mendel Craven, a scientist who once worked with Godzilla's DNA and who had a personal vendetta against the giant reptile. However, Dr. Craven's conscience eventually kicked in, and he teamed up with the HEAT (Humanitarian Environmental Analysis Team) to stop the Vorians' plan.

As the episode begins, King Ghidorah has already destroyed the HEAT headquarters and is wreaking havoc in New York City. Godzilla arrives to stop him, but the alien monster proves to be too powerful, with his lightning bolts and gravity beams. Meanwhile, the Vorians reveal their true form - insectoid creatures that plan to enslave the human race, with the monsters as their enforcers.

The humans, including Dr. Craven, Nick Tatopoulos (Godzilla's ally), and a military general, devise a desperate plan to defeat King Ghidorah and the other monsters. They lure them to a deserted island where they can unleash a weapon called the Dimension Tide - a satellite that can create a black hole powerful enough to suck both the monsters and the island into another dimension. However, using such a weapon comes with a terrible cost, the destruction of the island would kill millions of harmless animals that lived there.

Despite the ethical dilemma, the humans put their plan into action. The monsters arrive on the island and start to battle each other, with Godzilla using his atomic breath to blast King Ghidorah's heads off. Eventually, the Dimension Tide is fired, and the island begins to collapse. Godzilla, King Ghidorah, and the other monsters are sucked into the black hole, but Dr. Craven is also caught in the vortex, sacrificing himself to ensure the weapon's success.

The episode ends with the humans mourning Dr. Craven's passing and pondering the cost of their victory. Godzilla is shown swimming away, seemingly unharmed, but also seemingly happy the monsters have been defeated. Although the humans are safe for now, the existence of Godzilla and other kaiju monsters remains a threat, as does any future encounters with extra-terrestrial beings.

"Monster War (3)" serves as a satisfying conclusion to a three-episode arc that ups the stakes and the scale of the action. The animation is top-notch, and the battle scenes are thrilling, with some clever moments of strategy and teamwork. The human characters may not be as interesting as the monsters, but they have their moments of heroism and growth, especially Dr. Craven, who changes his ways and redeems himself. The ethical quandary of using the Dimension Tide adds a layer of moral complexity that puts the humans' actions into question, without making them seem like villains.

Fans of Godzilla and kaiju movies will find plenty to enjoy in "Monster War (3)", as it delivers on its promise of epic monster battles and has enough heart to make the story more than just a spectacle. Casual viewers might find it a bit too cheesy or formulaic, but it's hard to deny the appeal of seeing giant creatures fight each other on a grand scale. Overall, this episode is a solid addition to the first season of Godzilla: The Series, and a must-watch for fans of the genre.
