Ep 1. Episode 1

Glitch season 1 episode 1, titled "Episode 1," opens with a shot of the Australian countryside at night. We see a moveable bollard being dragged across the street before a police car pulls up, sirens blaring. Two officers exit the vehicle and approach a small building. Inside, we see six naked people who are all suffering from some kind of affliction. They aren't dead, but they aren't alive either. They are motionless and their eyes are blank.

The police officers contact their superiors, who instruct them to wait for backup. Meanwhile, one of the female patients - a small-time criminal named Kate Willis - suddenly comes to life. She springs up with a gasp and takes off naked into the night. The other five patients also come to life, and after quickly clothes themselves, they wander off into town.

The police quickly realize that these people have all been dead for some time - Kate, for example, had been buried in the cemetery for six years. The officers are at a loss for what to do, but their confusion is compounded when they receive a call from the nearby cemetery. A grave has been unearthed and the occupant - believed to be Kate's ex-husband - is now missing.

As the search for these resurrected individuals continues, we are introduced to several key characters. Sergeant James Hayes is one of the lead investigators on the case, and he is married to his work. His wife, Sarah, is pregnant and frustrated with how much he is gone. Dr. Elishia Glass is a physician who is brought on board to help with the case. And Vic, a local man, is struggling with his own demons as the result of a personal tragedy.

Despite the trauma they have been through, the resurrected individuals do not seem to remember anything about their lives - both those who have passed on and those who are still living. They are confused and frightened, and the townspeople are not sure what to do with them. James is deeply affected by the situation, particularly after he realizes that one of the resurrected individuals is a former girlfriend of his named Kate.

As the episode progresses, we start to get a sense that there is something larger at play here. Vic, who works at the local cemetery, has been involved in some kind of shady deal involving transportation of bodies. Kate, before she died, was involved with a mysterious cult-like group, and Dr. Glass seems to know more about the situation than she is letting on.

"Episode 1" is an excellent introduction to Glitch's unique premise. The show takes a sci-fi concept - people coming back to life - and treats it with the seriousness and weight that it deserves. The show's creators, Tony Ayres and Louise Fox, seem to have a deep understanding of their characters and the world they inhabit. The actors deliver strong performances across the board, particularly Patrick Brammall as James and Genevieve O'Reilly as Elishia.

One of the most striking things about this episode is the way it handles the idea of resurrection. Unlike other shows that might treat it as a joyful event, Glitch fully explores the emotional complexity of what it would be like to be brought back to life. The resurrected individuals are scared, disoriented, and unable to understand what is happening to them. The townspeople respond to them with a mix of fear and anger. It all feels very realistic and grounded in a way that is rare for a sci-fi show.

Another highlight of this episode is the way it establishes its setting. The small, rural town of Yoorana feels like a character unto itself, with its own history and secrets. The show does an excellent job of creating a sense of place and of establishing the relationships between various characters. You get a sense that this is a close-knit community that is still reeling from a tragedy that occurred several years prior.

Overall, "Episode 1" is a strong start to what promises to be a fascinating series. The show's unique premise, strong performances, and careful attention to character and world-building make it stand out in a crowded TV landscape. If you're a fan of sci-fi or character-driven dramas, Glitch is definitely worth a watch.
