In "Pot O' Gold," the fourth episode of season three of Glee, the glee club at William McKinley High School is reeling from their huge win at Nationals, but they're also struggling with the fact that some of their members have graduated and moved on. They're looking for fresh talent to keep the club going strong.
Enter Rory Flanagan (Damian McGinty), a charming Irish foreign exchange student who's just arrived at McKinley. The New Directions immediately take a shine to Rory, especially Finn (Cory Monteith), who takes on the role of his mentor. However, not everyone is so welcoming – especially Santana (Naya Rivera), who's convinced that Rory is gay and trying to steal her role as the resident diva of the club.
Meanwhile, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is still reeling from her defeat at Nationals, and she's turned her attention to the upcoming school board elections. She's convinced that her nemesis, Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba), is vulnerable and that she has a shot at taking over his job. To that end, she's enlisted a new recruit: Irish exchange student Rory Flanagan.
It turns out that Rory has an amazing singing voice, and Sue is convinced that if she can get him to join her campaign, he'll be the ace in the hole she needs to win over voters. At first, Rory is hesitant – he's only been in the country for a week, and he's not sure he wants to get involved in school politics. But when he realizes that joining Sue's campaign would mean getting in good with the school's most powerful woman, he decides to go for it.
The rest of the episode sees the New Directions gearing up for their big performance at the Ohio state championships, while Sue and Rory work behind the scenes to drum up support for Sue's candidacy. There are a few bumps in the road (including a hilarious scene in which Rory accidentally eats pot brownies with Artie), but ultimately everything comes together for a big finale.
"POT O' GOLD" is a fun and light-hearted episode that showcases some great performances by the Glee cast, as well as some guest appearances by McGinty and Lynch. It's a bit of a transitional episode, setting up some new storylines for the rest of the season, but it's also a standalone episode that can be enjoyed on its own. Fans of the show will love seeing the new characters introduced and the old favorites back in action, and it's sure to leave viewers smiling.
