In the eighth episode of Glee's second season entitled "Furt," the members of New Directions, the high school glee club, find themselves in a variety of challenging situations. Kurt and Finn, two of the show's central characters, deal with some unexpected family drama, while the rest of the club works to prepare for the upcoming sectionals competition.
At the beginning of the episode, Kurt's dad Burt and Finn's mom Carole announce that they are getting married. While Finn is excited about the prospect of gaining Kurt as a stepbrother, Kurt is much more hesitant about the whole thing. He loves his dad and is thrilled that he's found someone he wants to spend the rest of his life with, but he's also worried about how their new family dynamic will work, particularly because he and Finn have never really been close.
As Kurt wrestles with his fears about the wedding, several members of New Directions work to bring the group together for their sectionals performance. Quinn and Rachel -- two of the club's female members -- put aside their differences to perform a duet together, while Artie comes up with a unique and surprising song choice that sets the group apart from their competition.
Throughout the episode, there are also several confrontations that highlight the challenges of being different or perceived as different in high school. Kurt, who is openly gay, faces off against Finn's jock friends when they mock him for his fashion choices. Mercedes, one of the club's African American members, also confronts some of the school's white students when they make racist remarks about her and her family.
Despite these challenges, the members of New Directions come together to perform a show-stopping rendition of Queen's "Somebody to Love" at the sectionals competition. Their hard work pays off, and they are named the winners of the competition, earning them a spot in the upcoming regional competition.
"Furt" is an emotional episode of Glee that deals with a number of difficult topics, including family tension, bullying, and prejudice. However, it's also a celebration of the power of music to bring people together. Through their performances and their shared love of singing, the members of New Directions find a way to rise above their differences and come together as a family.
