Funk is the twenty-first episode of the first season of the American musical comedy-drama television series Glee. The episode originally aired on May 25, 2010, on the Fox network in the United States. The episode was directed by Elodie Keene and written by Ian Brennan.
In this episode, Vocal Adrenaline, led by Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff), vandalizes the choir room with eggs and toilet paper after finding out that New Directions will be performing funk music at Regionals. Meanwhile, Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) is distracted by his personal problems, including a breakup with Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) and the fact that Terri Schuester (Jessalyn Gilsig) is still planning on having a baby despite their separation.
In order to confront Vocal Adrenaline, New Directions decides to perform funk music in the hopes of winning against their rival show choir at Regionals. Puck (Mark Salling) sings "Give Up the Funk" by George Clinton, Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) sings "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, and Mercedes (Amber Riley) sings "Tell Me Something Good" by Rufus and Chaka Khan.
Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) also has a subplot in this episode, as she tries to reunite with her own high school cheerleading squad, the "Singing Inmates," for a performance during the Locals for the Iowa State Penitentiary, after she learns they have been disbanded.
Overall, Funk is a fun and entertaining episode of Glee that features some great musical performances. It also continues to develop the ongoing storylines for the characters, particularly with Will and Terri's relationship problems and Sue Sylvester's past.
