In Glee season 1 episode 16 titled "Home," the glee club prepares for their first ever performance in front of their parents. The episode begins with Will Schuester, the glee club coach, handing out solos to his students for the upcoming performance. Mercedes is surprised and hurt when she is not given a solo, despite being the strongest singer in the choir. Things come to a head during the performance when Rachel and Shelby perform a moving duet, causing Rachel to become emotional and question her relationship with her adoptive mother. Mercedes also surprises everyone by performing her own solo outside the glee club performance, showcasing her talent to her parents.
