Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, and Shoshanna are back in action, and in episode 3 of Girls season 5, we see them all in Japan. That's right, this episode takes place across the Pacific, where our favorite Girls characters are exploring Japanese culture and finding themselves in the process.
The episode opens with Hannah and Fran waking up in their hotel room in Tokyo. Hannah is still discovering the nuances of Fran's personality, and in this episode, we see the two of them having some disagreements that call into question the viability of their relationship. However, they put their differences aside to explore the city, where they eat amazing food and try out some Japanese karaoke.
Meanwhile, Marnie is having a different kind of experience. She's in Japan to reconnect with Charlie, her ex-boyfriend, who she's heard has moved to Tokyo and started a successful career as a tech entrepreneur. Marnie is thrilled to see Charlie again, but she quickly discovers that he's gotten engaged since they broke up. This revelation sends Marnie reeling, and the rest of the episode follows her as she deals with her feelings about Charlie, and what he means to her.
Jessa, always the most adventurous of the Girls crew, is also in Japan, and she's throwing herself into the culture with abandon. We see her getting a traditional Japanese tattoo (a painful process that she takes stoically, even though her friend suggests she'd be better off going to a spa), and she's also exploring her spirituality by visiting a Buddhist temple. Along the way, Jessa meets a young Japanese woman named Hiromi, who joins her on her travels. Hiromi is an aspiring filmmaker, and Jessa quickly befriends her, sharing her own experiences as a young creative person trying to make her way in the world.
Finally, we have Shoshanna, who has come to Japan to teach English. She's excited to be living in Tokyo, but she quickly discovers that the reality of teaching English as a foreign language is not as glamorous as she thought it would be. Shoshanna is struggling to connect with her students, who seem more interested in hip-hop music and video games than learning English. She's also having trouble adjusting to life in Tokyo, and we see her having a bit of a breakdown as she tries to navigate the crowded city and the language barrier.
Throughout the episode, we see the Girls characters dealing with different aspects of being in Japan: the culture shock, the language barrier, the food, the fashion, and the customs. Each character has their own unique experience, and the episode does a great job of showing the diversity and complexity of Japanese culture.
Overall, Girls season 5 episode 3 is a great addition to the show. It's a fun, engaging, and thought-provoking episode that explores the world of Japan through the eyes of our favorite Girls characters. Whether you're a longtime fan of the show or just tuning in, this is an episode that's sure to leave you entertained and wanting more.
