In Girls season 5 episode 2, titled “Good Man”, things start off with Hannah and Fran in bed. After he leaves for work, Hannah sets out to write an article about a female surf camp, but she struggles to find the right angle. Meanwhile, Adam’s relationship with Mimi-Rose continues to blossom, but they struggle to find common ground.
Jessa, on the other hand, is trying to turn over a new leaf and make amends for her past wrongdoings. Her first task is to help her ex-boyfriend’s sister, who is struggling with addiction. Jessa quickly realizes that trying to help her is much harder than she thought it would be.
Back in Brooklyn, Shoshanna is trying to get her life back on track after being fired from her job. She throws herself into campus life and meets a new group of friends, including a handsome young man named Jason. But things take a turn when she realizes that she has feelings for him and he doesn’t share those same feelings.
As the episode unfolds, each of the characters faces their own personal struggles and tries to figure out how to navigate their relationships and careers. Hannah is forced to confront her insecurities and her fear of being alone, while Adam and Mimi-Rose try to work through their differences and Jessa tries to make amends for her past mistakes.
Perhaps the most compelling storyline of the episode, however, belongs to Shoshanna. Her character has always been the comedic relief, but in this episode, she is given a chance to shine. Zosia Mamet’s portrayal of a young woman trying to find her way in the world is both relatable and heartbreaking, and her chemistry with the rest of the cast is palpable.
Overall, “Good Man” is a strong second episode for the fifth season of Girls. It manages to balance the show’s trademark humor with genuine, heartfelt moments, and sets up some interesting storylines for the rest of the season.
