In Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce season 5 episode 6, titled "Rule #1: Keep the Toast Short," the ladies are out for Lady Parts' newest venture, a book. As we know from previous episodes, Abby's BFF, Lyla, has been hired as the editor of Lady Parts. This time, however, she has a bigger role to play. The book chronicles the lives of all the Lady Parts ladies, their marriages, their divorces, and how they managed to keep up with life after divorce.
Abby (Lisa Edelstein) is excited about the book launch. She has been meeting with the publisher and is pleased with how everything has been coming together. As usual, things take a turn for the worse when something unexpected happens. Her ex-husband, Jake (Paul Adelstein), arrives at the book launch with Becca (Julianna Guill), his new fiancée, and the mother of his unborn child. Abby is taken aback by the sudden arrival of Jake and his new woman.
Phoebe (Beau Garrett) has her problems to deal with as well. She has been holding out on her boyfriend, Gemma (Daisy Betts), about a secret she has been keeping. Gemma eventually confronts Phoebe, and instead of coming clean, she ends up lying. Phoebe is also keeping a secret from the Lady Parts ladies, which is that she has been writing her own book. This secret almost gets her caught, but she manages to slip away unnoticed.
Delia (Necar Zadegan) is also dealing with her own drama. Her nemesis from law school, Jill (Stephanie Belding), comes into town. She needs Delia's help to fight a legal battle against her ex-husband. Delia, having a soft spot for Jill, decides to help her out against her better judgment.
Meanwhile, Jo (Alanna Ubach) is struggling after the loss of her father. Her father's estate is in shambles, and she needs to sell the house to settle his debts, but her sister, Zoe (Megan Hilty), is not letting her. She instead wants to keep the house as a memorial to their father.
This episode beautifully captures the essence of each of the Lady Parts ladies. It shows how they have grown as individuals and as a group. The book launch is a turning point in their friendship, and it shows just how far they have come from their initial days of divorce.
Overall, Rule #1: Keep the Toast Short is a refreshing episode of Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce. It has the perfect balance of drama, emotions and comedy. It is impressive how the show manages to keep the audience engaged with each character's storyline without overwhelming anyone. This episode, in particular, will leave you wanting more, and we can't wait to see what will happen next in the Lady Parts ladies' lives.
