Ep 5. Girl Meets The Truth

Riley and Maya are both excited when they hear that there's a classmate named Lucas who's new to their school. They're practically fighting each other to get a better look at him when he first walks into the classroom. However, when Lucas tells the class that he's from Texas, Maya immediately brands him as a "cowboy" and begins teasing him for his accent and boots. Later, the gang hangs out at Topanga's, where Lucas reveals that he's not actually from a ranch and doesn't ride horses. He tells them that he moved to New York City because he wanted to try living in a big city and see more of the world.

This revelation surprises and confuses Maya, who thought she had Lucas all figured out. She tells him that he's not being honest and accuses him of trying to be someone he's not. Lucas admits that he didn't correct people when they assumed he was a cowboy because it gave him a sense of identity, something he'd been struggling to find ever since his family moved around a lot when he was younger.

This leads Riley, Maya, and Farkle to open up about their own insecurities and struggles with fitting in. They realize that they've all been pretending to be something they're not in order to feel like they belong. The episode ends with Topanga reminding the kids that it's important to be honest and true to themselves, and that it's okay to not have everything figured out yet.
