In season 2 episode 6 of Girl Meets Farm, titled "Mom on the Farm," host and cookbook author Molly Yeh is joined by her mom for a day on the farm. Molly's mom, Lorraine, is visiting from Chicago and is excited to learn more about the farm-to-table lifestyle that Molly and her husband Nick have embraced.
The episode begins with Molly and Lorraine picking strawberries from the garden and using them to make homemade strawberry pop-tarts. Molly shows her mom how to make the crust from scratch, and they get creative with colorful fillings and glazes. Molly reflects on how cooking with her mom has always been a special bonding experience and how it's even more meaningful now that they're making memories on the farm.
Next, Molly and Lorraine visit the farm's piglets, where Molly teaches her mom about the different breeds and personalities of the pigs. Molly also explains the importance of sustainability and how they make use of all parts of the animal, from the meat to the bones and fat. They then head to the kitchen to cook up a delicious pork chop dinner with a side of roasted cauliflower and a salad made with fresh herbs from the garden. Lorraine is impressed with the flavors and textures of the meal and is grateful for the opportunity to learn more about how they source their ingredients.
After dinner, Molly and Lorraine relax with some homemade ice cream and reminisce about family traditions, including their annual Christmas cookie exchange. Molly introduces Lorraine to a new twist on an old classic, making Italian rainbow cookies with almond paste, chocolate, and jam filling.
Throughout the episode, Molly highlights the importance of family and passing down traditions from generation to generation. She reflects on how her upbringing in a Chinese-Jewish household has influenced her love of food and how she hopes to pass that love and appreciation for farm-to-table cooking on to her future children.
"Mom on the Farm" is a heartwarming episode that celebrates the bond between mothers and daughters and the joys of cooking and spending time together. Viewers will be inspired to try their hand at making homemade pastries and cooking with fresh, sustainable ingredients.
