In Gintama season 1 episode 6 titled "Keep Your Promise Even If It Kills You," we find our main character, Gintoki, in a bit of a predicament. He owes a huge debt to a loan shark named Otose, who also happens to be the owner of the place where he lives and runs his business. In order to pay off the debt, he takes on a job from Otose to find her lost cat, Tama.
Meanwhile, a group of rogue robots have been attacking innocent people in the streets of Edo. The government has offered a huge reward for whoever is able to bring them to justice. It just so happens that Tama is one of these robots and Gintoki is caught in the middle of things.
The episode starts off with Gintoki and his fellow Yorozuya members, Shinpachi and Kagura, searching for Tama in a creepy abandoned factory that serves as the robots' hideout. It's here where they run into trouble, as they are confronted by the robots, who are not happy about their intrusion.
Gintoki and Tama have a bit of a history, which is revealed in this episode. It turns out that Gintoki had encountered Tama before and promised her that he would take care of her. Tama is somewhat of a mother figure to the other robots and they are all very protective of her.
As the Yorozuya team tries to make their way out of the factory, they are attacked by the robots and one of them gets badly injured. It's during this moment that we see the true bonds of friendship between our main characters. They all rally around their wounded comrade and Shinpachi even offers to stay behind to buy them some time to escape.
Gintoki makes his way back to Otose's bar with Tama in tow, but he quickly realizes that things are not going to be as simple as just handing over the lost cat. Tama is a robot and the government has put a bounty on her head. Otose convinces Gintoki that the only way to clear Tama's name and keep his promise to her is to take her to the government and prove her innocence.
The last part of the episode is a bit of a rollercoaster ride as the team tries to make their way through the city, dodging government agents who are trying to capture them. It's all leading up to a climax in which Gintoki and Tama are face to face with the leader of the rogue robot group, who has a sinister plan to destroy all humans.
This episode is filled with action, humor, and heart. It shows the true bonds of friendship that exist between the characters and introduces us to some new ones, such as the lovable Tama. It's a great standalone episode that can be enjoyed by both longtime fans of the show and newcomers alike.
