In the sixth episode of Gino's Italian Escape season 2, titled "A Taste of the Sun: Bologna," host Gino D'Acampo travels to the city of Bologna in northern Italy to explore its unique cuisine and culture. Known as "La Grassa," or "The Fat One," Bologna is renowned for its rich and hearty dishes, such as ragù alla bolognese and tortellini.
Gino begins his culinary journey at the famous Mercato di Mezzo, a vibrant indoor market where locals come to buy fresh produce, meats, and cheese. Here, he meets local food blogger Francesca Montorsi, who leads him on a tour of the market, introducing him to the various vendors and sharing her knowledge about the city's food culture.
Next, Gino heads to Osteria del Sole, one of Bologna's oldest and most beloved bars. Here, he meets Carlo Venturini, the owner and a fifth-generation Bolognese, who shows him how to prepare a classic aperitivo platter of salumi, cheese, and olives. Gino also learns about the history of the bar, which dates back to the 15th century.
For his main course, Gino heads to Trattoria Anna Maria, a family-run restaurant that has been serving classic Bolognese cuisine for over 30 years. Here, he meets owner and chef Anna Maria, who teaches him how to make tortellini from scratch, a skill that has been passed down through generations in her family. Gino also tries Anna Maria's famous ragù alla bolognese, which is made with a blend of meats and slow-cooked for hours.
In between meals, Gino explores more of Bologna's cultural offerings, such as the city's iconic towers and the Archiginnasio, a historic building that was once the seat of the University of Bologna. He also pays a visit to the Gelato Museum, where he learns about the history and science of gelato and tries some of the museum's unique flavors.
Finally, Gino ends his day with a visit to Casa Minghetti, a stylish and modern restaurant that serves contemporary takes on traditional Bolognese dishes. Here, he meets chef Giammarco Piacenti, who prepares a delicious seafood dish with a local twist. Gino also tries a dessert made with zabaglione, a rich and creamy Italian custard.
Throughout the episode, Gino showcases the unique flavors and traditions of Bologna, highlighting the city's rich culinary history and the passion of its local chefs and food artisans. With his signature charm and enthusiasm, Gino takes viewers on a journey through the vibrant and flavorful heart of northern Italy.
