In the second episode of Ginormous Food's second season, host Josh Denny travels to Columbia, South Carolina, to find some of the biggest and most outrageous dishes this historic city has to offer.
First up, Josh visits Southern Belly BBQ, where owner Ed Buffington serves up "The Big Daddy," a massive burrito weighing in at six pounds. Josh can barely lift the behemoth, which is stuffed with pulled pork, mac and cheese, collard greens, and more. But he manages to take a few bites, and declares it one of the most flavorful burritos he's ever tasted.
Next, Josh heads to The Whig, a popular spot for burgers and beer. Here he meets owner Tony Serratore, who introduces him to The Widowmaker, a massive burger piled high with bacon, a fried egg, and all the traditional toppings. The real showstopper, though, is the bun - two giant grilled cheese sandwiches used as buns. Josh can barely fit the burger in his mouth, but he manages to take a huge bite and proclaims it "ginormous" indeed.
At Za's Brick Oven Pizza, Josh meets chef Brannon Florie, who has created a pizza that defies tradition. His "Gourmet Pie" is piled high with ingredients like lobster, shrimp, bacon, and arugula, and is finished with a generous drizzle of truffle oil. Josh marvels at the unique combination of flavors, and declares it one of the best pizzas he's ever had.
Finally, Josh ends his Columbia tour at Villa Tronco, the city's oldest Italian restaurant. Here he meets Joe Roche, the grandson of the restaurant's founder, who serves up an enormous bowl of spaghetti and meatballs. The dish is big enough to feed a family, and Josh dives in with gusto. He notes that the meatballs are perfectly seasoned and the sauce has just the right amount of tang.
Throughout the episode, Josh marvels at the sheer size and creativity of the dishes he's encountered in Columbia. He jokes that he may need to "stretch his stomach" in order to finish all the food on his plate, but in the end he manages to savor every bite. Ginormous Food's second season is off to a delicious start with this episode, showcasing some of Columbia's most unique and extravagant eats.
