That's What You Get, Folks, For Makin' Whoopee is the second episode of the seventh season of Gilmore Girls. The episode opens with Lorelai and Luke enjoying a cozy breakfast together at the diner. However, their peace is soon interrupted by a call from Emily. She informs them that Richard has been hospitalized due to heart trouble, and they must rush to the hospital.
At the hospital, the entire Gilmore clan is assembled, including Rory, who has dropped everything to be by her grandfather's side. Emily is predictably overbearing, constantly micromanaging the doctors and nurses and dishing out orders left and right. Lorelai, eager to help but unsure of how to do so, tries to fade into the background. Meanwhile, Rory is struggling with her own feelings of helplessness and fear, caused by seeing her beloved grandfather so sick.
As the episode progresses, tensions rise within the family. Emily and Richard bicker over everything from hospital dinner options to whether or not Richard should be discharged. Meanwhile, Lorelai and Luke squabble over the best way to support the family and how to handle Emily's bossiness. Through it all, Rory does her best to hold everything together, even though she's not sure she can.
The episode's title comes from a conversation between Lorelai and Luke. Lorelai is lamenting the difficulties of trying to be there for everyone at the hospital, feeling like she's constantly failing. Luke reminds her that life is messy and that sometimes, "that's what you get, folks, for makin' whoopee." In other words, sometimes things don't go according to plan, and that's just the way it is.
As the episode draws to a close, news arrives that Richard's condition is improving, and he's going to be okay. The family members all breathe a sigh of relief and begin to relax a little. Emily even takes a step back from her controlling ways, realizing that her children are all grown up now and can make their own decisions. The episode ends with the family sharing a meal together at the hospital cafeteria, finally able to let their guard down and enjoy each other's company.
Overall, That's What You Get, Folks, For Makin' Whoopee is an emotional episode that showcases the complicated dynamics within the Gilmore family. It's a reminder that life can be messy and unpredictable, but that family is always there to help pick up the pieces.
