Lorelai is preparing for a Friday night dinner with her parents when she discovers that Rory has planned a girls' night at their home with some of her Yale classmates. The two events are scheduled to take place on the same night, and neither mother nor daughter wants to cancel their plans. Lorelai is taken aback when she discovers that Rory plans to have Logan, her boyfriend, and his friends, Finn and Colin, over the house during the girls' night. She objects, but Rory insists that they are just going to hang out in the pool house, and promises that nothing untoward will happen.
At dinner with her parents, Lorelai cannot hide her anxiety, and her father, Richard, picks up on it immediately. She confesses that she has a lot on her plate and reveals that Sookie, her best friend and business partner, is pregnant. Richard is excited about the news, having always doted on Sookie, but Emily, Lorelai's mother, is less than pleased, sensing that Lorelai thinks that Sookie's pregnancy could destabilize their catering business. The conversation is interrupted by a phone call from Rory, who is calling to cancel her girls' night, saying that she isn't feeling well. Lorelai is concerned, but also annoyed that her plans have been disrupted.
Rory's cancelation is a ruse, however, as she proceeds to host Logan, Finn, and Colin, in the pool house. Things start off innocently enough, with the group playing Truth or Dare and ordering take-out. However, things quickly take a more dangerous turn, and the boys convince Rory to steal a yacht from the docks. Rory is hesitant, but eventually agrees to go along with the plan. They sneak onto the boat and take it out to sea, where they continue to party and drink.
Meanwhile, Lorelai heads home, only to find the pool house full of beer cans and loud music blaring. She is furious and demands that the boys leave, and is equally upset with Rory for lying to her. Rory is defensive, telling her mother that she is overreacting and that it was just a bit of harmless fun. Lorelai is unconvinced, reminding Rory that she is responsible for her actions and that she could have put herself and other people in danger.
The two argue, with Rory accusing Lorelai of being too controlling and Lorelai reprimanding Rory for not respecting her mother's boundaries. The argument ends with Rory storming out of the pool house and Lorelai left alone to clean up after the boys. Meanwhile, Rory finds herself on the yacht with Logan, feeling exhilarated and alive. However, as they dock the boat and head back to town, Rory realizes that she has made a big mistake and that her actions could have serious consequences.
The episode ends with Rory and Lorelai reunited, but the relationship between the mother and daughter is strained. Rory apologizes for lying to her mother, but Lorelai tells her that she needs to start acting like a responsible adult. Rory agrees, but the consequences of her actions are still looming large. The episode sets up a storyline that will be explored in future episodes, as Rory struggles to come to terms with her behavior and its impact on her relationships with her mother, her friends, and her boyfriend.
