Ep 2. Witness for the Persecution

Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 of CONTROL, is back in action in season 3 of the classic spy-comedy series "Get Smart." In episode 2, titled "Witness for the Persecution," Max is tasked with protecting the life of a key witness in a major organized crime trial.

As the episode begins, we are introduced to the witness in question, a mild-mannered accountant named Sidney Smith (played by character actor Richard Deacon). Sidney has agreed to testify against a powerful mob boss named Anthony Falcone, and his testimony is crucial to the prosecution's case. But as soon as Sidney is placed under witness protection, attempts are made on his life, leaving Max to intervene and keep him safe from harm.

Along the way, Max must contend with a host of zany obstacles and eccentric characters. He blasts his way out of a Chinese laundry using his trademark cone of silence, only to find himself pursued by a hapless spy disguised as a hot dog vendor. Later, he tangles with a pair of bumbling hitmen sent by Falcone to eliminate the witness, leading to a wild chase through the streets of Los Angeles and culminating in a rooftop showdown.

As always, Max's arsenal of gadgets comes in handy. He deploys a pocket-sized bulldozer to dig a tunnel to safety, and uses his shoephone to call for backup from his long-suffering boss, the Chief. Amidst all the chaos, Max also finds time for a bit of romance. He meets a beautiful undercover agent named Sylvia (played by the lovely Leslie Parrish), who helps him unravel the mystery of who is behind the attacks on Sidney.

Despite the many twists and turns, Max ultimately prevails, saving Sidney's life and ensuring that Falcone is brought to justice. Along the way, he cracks plenty of one-liners and delivers his trademark deadpan humor. "Witness for the Persecution" is a classic example of the show's blend of action, comedy, and slapstick, and showcases the talents of star Don Adams, who won three Emmy awards for his role as Maxwell Smart.
